A Resource for Modernist, Vintage, Antique & Contemporary Art & Objects
Our fine art collection is comprised of over 8,000 works of rediscovered, historically significant and contemporary artists. It reflects the major styles and movements of the 20th Century. Every collection is researched, reconditioned and catalogued at our Salon in San Francisco.
For twelve years I have been exploring the mountain ridge and valley around my home in Mendocino, Northern California. It has become the center of my inspiration and creativity - I call this place "The Land". I am presenting a fine art photography and oil painting documentation of my personal communion with the surrounding Northern California forests, meadows, creeks, flora, fauna, as well as the orchard and garden my partner Mario and I are tending.
Number nine of a typical rural French-Canadian family of 10, I grew up in Québec, Canada. I then spent most of my early adulthood experiencing Montréal, the other distinctive culture of Québec. This urban exposure to art and my mom's passion for craft (especially weaving) lead me to specialize in ceramic at École de Céramique Bonsecours. In 1999, I immigrated to San Francisco where I co-founded Lost Art Salon. A parallel and most meaningful discovery of California took place North, in a picturesque dreamscape down a rural dirt road, inland Mendocino. That is where we acquired several acres of land and took on the task of restoring an organic heritage fruit orchard that was established by Portuguese settlers at the Turn-of-the-Century. This life-long project, the remoteness of the site and our respect for the environment called for the construction of a fully off the grid sustainable hay/bale home. (Covered in: "Off the Grid Homes, case studies for sustainable living" by Lori Ryker; Sunset Magazine October 2006; Anthology Magazine Summer 2011).
The "school" of collecting fine art through Lost Art Salon mixed with the discovery of Northern California inspired me to continue working on my own creativity expression. The sinuous shape and the rich texture of the burgundy red Manzanita tree and its cousin, the melon orange Madrone presented a new medium. I started to sculpt the wood and incorporate found-objects creating original lamps. Photography and oil painting followed, proving to be my preferred ways to express my connection to the land. The lengthy process of one medium over the immediacy of the other strike the right balance for me. Oil paint applied to a canvas reminds me of the meditative nature of hand molding clay, my first passion within the art world, and photography allows me to capture those unique moments when seasons are traveling through their cycles setting the light in harmony with the time of the day. I use the camera to reinvigorate painting, and my photography is in return enriched by the dialogue with painting.
My first show of mostly photographs will take place at Lost Art Salon in the fall of 2011. A small part of the exhibition will underline the symbiosis between my oil paintings and photographs. My work will be displayed upstairs from the main salon in our new Penthouse Gallery.
