Edmund Franklin Ward was born in 1892 in
White Plains, New York and died in 1991. He studied painting at the Art
Students League in New York City from 1910 to 1912. A friend of Norman
Rockwell’s at the Art Students' League, the duo set-up a studio
together early in their carreers. Like Rockwell, Ward illustrated for
the Saturday Evening Post as well as other well known magazines,
including: Red Book, Woman’s Home Companion, Country Gentleman, McCalls
and Colliers. He also did ad work, murals and government commissions
during both World Wars. He could capture intimate, delicate scenes as
well as large, action-filled dramas, and even comedy with a sure touch.
Ward’s work was included in a 2002 show at the Norman Rockwell Museum
called "Toast of the Town: Norman Rockwell and the Artists of New
Rochelle," The exhibition presented early paintings produced by Norman
Rockwell alongside the diverse artwork of dozens of his contemporaries
(including Ward) who also called New Rochelle, a suburb of New York
City, home.
Throughout his life, Ward was active in the art’s
community. He served as a member of the faculty at the Art Students
League from 1924 to 1925. He held membership in the Salmagundi Club,
the Guild of Freelance Artists, and the Society of Illustrators. His
works have been exhibited at these venues as well as at such
prestigious locales as the National Academy of Art and the Art
Institute of Chicago where he won a prize in 1925. Ward gave up
illustration in his later years and concentrated on painting,
particularly scenes from Maine.
